When is a pile of dirt a life lesson? By Eric Gilboord

An old fable with a few twists.
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; the donkey just wasn't worth retrieving.

He invited his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovels and began to throw dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down into the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt hitting his back, the donkey was doing something to help himself. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take another step up. Pretty soon, everyone watched as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted away! They all screamed "we knew he could do it" and ran off to buy shares in his start-up. (Ok just kidding.)

MORAL: Life is going to shovel all kinds of dirt on you. The trick to getting out of your personal well is to accept the dirt for what it is, make it work for you and take a step up. Our troubles can be used as steppingstones to helping ourselves. We can get out of the deepest wells just by using what is around us, not stopping and never giving up!

Keep shaking it off and taking a step up.
As you go into the new year please make the biggest pile of dirt you can and keep stepping up.

This is the first in a short series of fables According 2 Eric. Please let me know what you think of this one and feel free to suggest other fables I could use. Thanks, A2E

Cheers, Eric A2E
